El Deafo by Cece Bell

El Deafo

El Deafo is an autobiographical graphic novel about a girl who loses her hearing as a result of an illness at age 4, and chronicles her childhood as she struggles with being different. As a young child, her deafness affects her self-esteem, her interactions with others, and her friendships, but as she gets older, Cece finds her voice and accepts herself for who she is. This was a great story that reminded me of the “Smile” books by Raina Telgemeier. El Deafo won a Newbery Honor Award this year.
