Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood

Glory Be

“Glory Be” is a 2016 Bluestem Nominee. The year is 1964 and Glory is looking forward to summer, swimming in the community pool, and her birthday on the Fourth of July. However, her town finds itself in the middle of a Civil Right’s battle unlike they’ve ever seen before. Freedom Workers from the North have arrived to help bring equal rights for all people, and Glory befriends the daughter of one of those workers. This new friendship drives a stake in her relationship with her oldest and best friend, and the entire town is torn in half regarding the closing of the community pool. Will Glory get to enjoy her birthday as she planned, or will this summer of change… change everything?
